How it works

From source files to finished batch

01

Add JPEG, PNG, or WebP

Choose the output format. JPEG and WebP use a quality setting; PNG uses its own lossless or reduced-palette encoder.

02

Choose quality and dimensions

Start with Balanced, or set a quality level. Optionally limit the maximum long edge for an additional size reduction.

03

Check the real saving

After encoding, compare the exact source and output sizes. Keep-smaller mode preserves the original if encoding grows it.

Common uses

Built for everyday image work

Faster web pages

Reduce camera-sized assets before upload to lower transfer weight and improve loading behavior.

Email attachments

Shrink multiple photos to a more practical total size without installing another application.

Review copies

Create lighter drafts while keeping your high-resolution source files untouched.

Worth knowing

Keep the output predictable

Quality is not a percentage saved

A quality value controls the encoder tradeoff. Actual savings depend on the source image and are measured after encoding.

PNG palette

Choose lossless to preserve decoded colors, or reduce the palette to 32–256 colors. A smaller palette can change gradients and is not suitable for every photo.

Target file size

Enter a target KB limit to search JPEG/WebP quality. If needed, dimensions are reduced as well. PNG target mode uses palette encoding and dimension reduction. Always check the actual result size.

FAQ

Compress Images Online questions

Why can a compressed result be larger?

A source may already be efficiently encoded. Re-encoding it with different settings can add bytes, so the editor reports negative savings and can keep the original.

Can the tool compress PNG files?

Yes. Select PNG output and use the dedicated PNG encoder. Lossless preserves decoded pixels; a reduced palette trades some colors for fewer bytes. The JPEG quality slider is not used for PNG.

Does reducing dimensions help?

Usually. Pixel count is a major factor in file size, so a reasonable maximum long edge can produce a larger saving than quality changes alone.
